Great find - Artists of British Columbia Volume 1

Rojia and myself were out placing flyers for our Concept to Completion: Abstract Painting in Acrylics and Mixed Media on Panel workshop in North Vancouver a few weeks back and came across Craig Yeats's gallery who were selling this book entitled; Artists of British Columbia, volume 1 (ISBN 978-0-9783296-4-8) assembled by Leighton Studio Gallery. The book caught my eye immediately as the number of extremely talented artists, many of them abstract. I had to have it. To obtain your own copy pls contact 604-926-0039 or lsgallery@leighdon.ca.

The following are five fabulous abstract artists that caught my attention when perusing through the book:

1. Jeanne Krabbendam www.jeanekrabbendam.com Her work exhibits an excellent example of using heavy texture and collage elements such as corrugated cardboard and plaster mixed with acrylics.


2. Catherine Fields www.nsartists.ca/catherinefields I just LOVE the loose painterly feel of the painting "rhythm and harmony" shown in the book.
3. 


4. Pnina Granirer www.pninagranirer.com (wow!) The painting shown in this book, " A Love Story" is the tender interplay between abstract and the human figure.


5. Jennifer Harwood. www.jenniferharwood.com What captivated me about Jennifer's work is it's vibrancy with her use of colour and overall clarity and simplicity.


6. Therese Joseph www.therese-joseph.com I love her bold use of colour and then the sketches on top of it in the panting called "untamed" shown in the book.

Bev, proudly showing off her beautiful canvas pad pieces. Bev got so excited during the span of this class that she got insomnia many nights and would wake up at 4 am to paint!

Heather is not only a fantastic painter but also makes hand made books that she shared with us during the class. I had the pleasure to meeting her daughter and also her daughter in law at the art show.
Elizabeth's work had such vibrant colours, we all enjoyed her pieces she is showing here.

From Concept to Completion - Abstract Painting on Panel in Acrylics & Mixed Media- with Deb Chaney and Rojia Dadashzadeh

Each participant will experience working on three wood panels as we take you on a creative journey sharing our art making process with you from start to finish.

Students will be encouraged to explore language, colour, composition, nurture emotional richness, spontaneity and experimentation and to develop conceptual ideas.

A slide show presentation of modern art will be given with discussion and emphasis on composition, balance, colour, form, symbolism,the representation of motion ,and the superimposition of images in the organization of space in abstract paintings.

Both one-on-one and group critiques are aimed at enhancing individual growth.

Media will include heavy body acrylics, mixing and pouring mediums, moulding pastes and gels, and professional grade MSA or Polymer Varnish. Various materials and mediums, for example, coloured pencil, crayon, and inks will be introduced and used to experiment within the painting process.

The workshop will include plenty of demonstrations and time for students to work. You will get to learn and experience:

1. - Experience taking an idea from concept to completion with our support and guidance
   

2. - Experiment with new paint colours and mediums provided by our sponsors
   

3. - Prepare wood panels for painting
   

4. - Apply paint to panel
   

5. - Learn the fundamental of colour mixing and create your own colour mixing tables
   

6. - Create depth and texture by via scratching and electrical sanding techniques
   

7. - Experience group discussion on creative process& journey of making abstract art
   

8. - Varnish the result painting with professional quality archival product
